Pusztafogacsi Nepomuki Szent János kápolna

Once a crowded farmland with about 500 people living on it, Pusztafogacs and its little chapel now stands alone on the Great Plain of Hungary.More than a hundred little farms were scattered around the fields, with all kinds of farm animals, smaller and bigger farm houses, little estate buildings, a school, and even a community house with television in it. The peak of Fogacs life was between the 1920s and 1960s. Then from the middle of the 1960s, since no asphalt roads were built and the school got closed, families started to move to the nearby villages of Tarnamera, Jaszszentandras and some more. By the middle of the 1970s almost no one lived in Fogacs and once again after the Turkish rule, it stood without inhabitants. The only reminder of a once vibrant community are the concrete well rings poking out from the fields, and chapel, built by the Almasy family, the owner of the area in 1777. The bad years of the chapel started from the mid-1970s, when its furniture was removed and taken to the nearby churches. From the on, it was free robbery, the roofs, windows, doors, all metal elements were stolen from the chapel. Once the rain water got through the roof, the rendering of the walls started to decay, and evenrually fall off. With no maintenance, the area around the chapel and the cemetery got full of bushes and trees, only some graves were maintained by relatives. In the mid-1990s a small group of once inhabitants of Pusztafogacs pinched in and started to renovate the chapel, got a roof on it, and also, the stolen metal belfry was replaced by a new one. Sadly, the replacement was stolen again in just two weeks. After a few years, the chapel went back to a decade-long sleep, when people wanted to save it again from falling to bricks. This time a wider audience got into the idea of saving the chapel and the memory of Fogacs, and not so much later, the roof was repaired, and by 2011 the outside rendering was restored, with the belfry as well. Almost 500 people came to celebrate the re-consecration of the chapel for the Saint John of Nepomouk. Since then the ex-locals and their descendants are celebrating the event every year around the 16th of May.
